چکیده

In Paper V of this series (1) it was found that the citrate which accumulates during the oxidation of W-tagged acetoacetate by rat kidney in the presence of oxalacetate had a high content of isotopic carbon, thus confirming the participation of tricarboxylic acids in the oxidation of fatty acid intermediates. The present study represents a continuation of the investigation of this reaction with the objects of determining (a) to whatextent acetoacetate contributes to citrate formation under anaerobic conditions, (b) whether acetoacetate is converted to citrate in other tissues besides kidney (2), and (c) to what extent the appearance of isotopic carbon in the citrate could be attributed to assimilation of COZ.

Intermediary Metabolism in Diabetes Mellitus on the Synthesis of Carbohydrate from Fat in the Liver and from Acetoacetate in the Kidney* by William C. Stadie,

The possible conversion of fatty acids into carbohydrates by mammalian tissues continues to be a controversial subject. Because carbohydrates are convertible into fats, and fats, in certain forms of plant life, are unquestionably converted into carbohydrates, the non-reversibility of this reaction in animal tissues is accepted with reluctance. Moreover, this conversion is the pivotal reaction i...

Pathway of carbon flow during fatty acid synthesis from lactate and pyruvate in rat adipose tissue.

The metabolism of pyruvate and lactate by rat adipose tissue was studied. Pyruvate and lactate conversion to fatty acids is strongly concentration-dependent. Lactate can be used to an appreciable extent only by adipose tissue from fasted-refed rats. A number of compounds, including glucose, pyruvate, aspartate, propionate, and butyrate, stimulated lactate conversion to fatty acids. Based on stu...

Acetoacetate Formation in Liver

In 1944, Weinhouse et al. (1) reported that the incubation of carboxyllabeled octanoate with rat liver slices yielded acetoacetate in which the carboxyl and carbonyl carbons were equally labeled. Random condensation of 2-carbon units resulting from ,8 oxidation was therefore offered by these workers as a possible mechanism for the formation of acetoacetic acid from octanoate. The conversion of ...

Metabolic fates of isovaleric acid and isovalthine in rats.

1. Isovaleric acid-1-C14, -4-C14, or C14-CaC03 with or without non-isotopic isovaleric acid was orally administered to rats and the incorporation of these isotopes into liver cholesterol, fatty acid, or urinary isovalthine was examined. 2. Isopropyl group of isovaleric acid was more efficiently utilized for cholesterol synthesis than carboxyl group, and also for cholesterol synthesis than for f...

Sulfonated porous carbon catalyzed esterification of free fatty acids

The esterification of free fatty acids (FFA) with methanol is studied using Sulfonated Porous Carbon (SPC) as catalyst. In compare to the amorphous sugar catalyst and protonated Nafion, the proposed catalyst shows stability and high efficient performance in biodiesel production. The highest initial rate of oleic acid conversion is obtained at catalyst loading of 1 mmol H+ and mole ra...
